The Medical Director of the Institute for Sport and Preventive Medicine, Professor Tim Meyer, has been team doctor for the German national football team since 2001. Scientists at the Institute have for example published studies about injuries to Bundesliga (highest football division in Germany) players and the effect of football on overweight children. In addition the Institute is the medical first port of call for athletes of the Rhineland-Palatinate/Saarland Olympic Training Centre and carries out squad examinations for national and state athletic squads. FIFA explicitly recommends active football players to seek medical advice at these Centres of Excellence.
Their extensive experience in sports medical treatment of clubs and national teams, their scientific expertise in football research and the excellent education of sports medicine practitioners have all contributed to the Institute for Sport and Preventive Medicine of the Saarland University being named a FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence.
The following will be speaking at the ceremony:
Professor Volker Linneweber, President of Saarland University Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, Saarland Minister for Work, Family, Prevention, Welfare and SportsProfessor Jiri Dvorak, Chairman of the FIFA Medical Assessment and Research Centre (F-MARC) Professor Tim Meyer, Medical Director of the Institute for Sport and Preventive Medicine at the Saarland University on “Options and difficulties in football research (not only) in Germany”
