On Friday, November 5th, 2010, the DFKI German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence opened its new visualization center on the Saarbrücken university campus. This representative place of research, innovation and technology transfer was created in cooperation of the Intel Visual Computing Institute (IVCI), the Cluster of Excellence Multimodal Computing and Interaction (MMCI) and the Saarland University´s Department of Computer Science. Besides own research projects, the center mainly provides visualization services implying modern 3D presentation and interaction technology for industry, public institutions and other interested parties.

On the opening of the visualization center, the DFKI could also welcome the Saarland Minister of Economics and Science, Dr. Christoph Hartmann, and Joseph D. Schutz, Vice President Intel Labs. Following the opening ceremony, the various DFKI research divisions presented latest hands-on research findings and innovations. Moreover, there was a possibility for interviews and photoshooting.

Parts of the Intel Visual Computing Institute, the working group "AI in Commerce", and the research division "Agents and Simulated Reality" have found a new home at the visualization center. The fundamental informatics cluster of excellence, where the DFKI can find junior scientists to work in the new building, shall be completed by working groups of the application-oriented cluster of excellence "Software Innovations for Digital Businesses". Another essential element of the building is a showroom for 3D visualizations of the DFKI research section "Agents and Simulated Reality". The showroom is used as a showcase of the latest DFKI developments, e. g. the car of the future, but also for public information events using visualization technologies.
